How to Make Eyeshadows Pop! (& last all NYE)

What better way to bring on the New Year than with a fabulous makeup look?! It’s always fun to play up the makeup on New Year’s Eve with sparkle & shine, but since you’ll be staying up late to celebrate, you’ll want those eyeshadows to pop & that beautiful base to stay looking flawless. So here are a few tips for helping your makeup hold up as long as you do!

1. Use cream products as a base

Creams make a good foundation for a long-lasting look as they give any powders you put on top more to adhere to. Using Prime + Conceal that is 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone will add a soft highlight to the face, while using one that is 2-3 shades darker will make a natural looking contour. If you prefer a cooler contour tone, try using Brow Pomade in Ash Brown. And if you love a good blush, you might give one of our Vegan Shea Butter lipsticks or Pretty Balms a try as a cream blush -- have fun and experiment with your Root products!

2. Lock it in with powder

Setting your makeup with powder is a main key to a flawless, lasting finish. I love using our Pearl Powder Foundation to set the entire face, as it adds additional coverage while keeping everything in place. Also, to add color to your face while preventing your cream contour from budging, try setting it with a bronzer. This goes for blush as well! Any cream product you use will last so much longer with a dusting of powder on top.

3. Make your eyeshadow base bright

Whenever you layer eyeshadows on top of a very light base, it will increase the intensity of the color. Here I used Prime + Conceal in Fair to brighten and cover any discoloration, while also giving the shadows a better base to stick to. Next I used a light cream color, Shell Eyeshadow, to set it from crease to brow bone. This method of priming the eyes helps eyeshadows pop, yet still blend beautifully.

4. Apply your eyeshadow wet

Applying any of our eyeshadows wet not only increases their intensity, but it also gives them an extremely long wear time. With a dampened flat eyeshadow brush, I applied Date Night Eyeshadow to the outer and inner parts of the lid, and then went in with White Gold Illuminator on the very center of the lid for a halo effect. Try using gentle patting motions when applying the color for more controlled and precise application.

5. Turn your lipstick into a stain

No dramatic look is complete without a beautiful lip color, and here I choose Foxy Vegan Shea Butter Lipstick. But I applied it with a lip brush and really worked the color into the lips to create a stain. This on its own will last a good long while, but for even more staying power, try setting your lips with a corresponding color in powder form; I used Cassandra Blush for a rosy matte finish.
