How to Apply Bronzer & Not Look Orange

by Kayla Reusche on May 29, 2019

It’s no secret we all want glowy, bronzed skin 365 days a year. The unfortunate truth is not everyone is blessed with a year-round splash of color. But, there is good news - using a little bit of bronzer can help anyone fake a good tan all year long.

I know you’re still probably reliving that time in middle school when you applied your bronzer five shades too orange, but it’s easier than it seems.

Here’s how to apply bronzer for a glowy summertime look:

Find your Perfect Match

Every skin tone is different, so you need to find the perfect bronzer shade for YOU. To get a healthy, natural glow, keep these two things in mind.

  1. Be careful of the orange shades. Bronzers with orange or red undertones can come off a little too orangey, making you relive that middle school nightmare.

  2. No matter your skin tone, you want to shoot for a color that’s about 1-2 shades darker than your skin. Anything darker will throw up red flags that your glow isn’t natural.

Great for any skin tone: Find a bronzer that adds warmth, while illuminating your skin tone's natural glow. You want something that's not too warm, but not too cool either. Our Original Bronze Powder is by far our most popular bronze shade, & it gives such a healthy looking glow!

Fair-light skin:
Go for a that's just a shade or two darker than your skin color, like Light Bronze Powder. Applying a shade that’s too dark can make your makeup look muddy. Light Bronze is a cool shade, which is also best for natural contouring.

Medium-olive skin: Pick a bronzer with earthy or warm undertones. It will accentuate the warmth you already have. Maya Pressed Mineral Bronze gives an earthy, peach vibe, perfect for medium skin tones.

Dark-deep skin: Powders can sometimes make deep skin tones look dull, so go for a bronzer with a little shimmer. Warm, deep tones are best for darker skin types so the bronze can really pop. Sunkissed Bronze Powder is the perfect for dark-deep skin tones with a little bit of warmth and shimmer!

Where to Apply Bronzer

To get a natural glow with your bronzer, you want to apply it where the sun would naturally hit your face. This includes the cheekbones, forehead, nose, and chin.

You can even bring the bronzer down your neck to give it a bit of color. You don’t want a white neck next to a bronzed face. Again - reliving that middle school horror!

Follow the “3” Rule

The easiest way to apply bronzer is to follow the “3” rule. Use your brush to apply the product in the shape of a “3”. Wherever the brush touches first will get the most color payout, so start at your cheekbones & then hit your forehead and jawline. Repeat these steps on your other side, making a backwards “3”. And, don’t forget to give your nose and neck some warmth!

The key to bronzer success: blend, blend, blend! You don’t need perfect definition with bronzer, so be sure to blend it out for a bronzed, healthy glow.
